Objective
In 2022, we produced an INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS MANUAL for Mexico with the Delegation of the European Union in Mexico, as a guide on how to initiate industrial symbiosis projects in Mexico, thanks to the successful pilot experience of Chihuahua Green City.
With the objective of presenting the Manual and the Chihuahua Green City success story to other states in Mexico, a dissemination mission was launched, initially across the states of Guanajuato, Puebla, and Yucatán, as well as in any other Mexican territories that requested it, together with the Mexican employers’ association COPARMEX.

Methodology
Presentation of the Industrial Symbiosis Manual.
Presentation of the Chihuahua Green public-private program: The evolution of the municipal industrial symbiosis project Chihuahua Green City has made it possible to extend services to companies and territorial entities throughout the rest of the state, thanks to the explicit support of the Government of the State of Chihuahua.
Local experiences: The different territories have very interesting initiatives and challenges that become evident and represent an excellent foundation for the development of more systemic industrial symbiosis projects.
Collective working session: Collaborative work to identify the level of preparedness, local needs, and next steps toward implementation.
Highlights
This is an initiative that:
- Requires a clear political commitment capable of leveraging strategic waste valorization opportunities to drive sustainable territorial development.
- Depends on the explicit support of companies.
- The support of the European Union provides the visibility and confidence needed to attract initial interest and guarantees of success. It is also a gateway to Mexico-European business collaboration, with major investment opportunities for companies.
